Looking for good nursing home for mom in Ocean County. Does anybody have any suggestions? This is such a stressful decision to make.

Thanks, Marge

Marge, my heart goes out to you.
A few years back I was told that my Mom only had about 18 months to live.
She was in her 80's and lived a very strong life. She was never dependent on anyone, but now she needed 24 hour care. I searched various Homes in Ocean County, trying not only to keep my Mother close to me but to make sure that she had great care.
I took a trip one day to Tallwoods in Bayville.
I was pleasantly surprised on how clean it was and that the atmosphere was not one of "roll the old folks out and leave them alone".
My Mother was there for eight months until she passed away, and everyone there gave her great care and attention.

My husband's grandfather stayed at Shorrock Gardens in Brick for some time and his family was happy with them. They used another one for his grandmother this past year, but I can't remember which one, and I think they only used a different one because Shorrock became out of the way or something silly like that. It wasn't because of the care.

My mother was in Shorrock for a short time. It was decent. It is difficult to say because I feel a lot depends on the individual. My mom was there for rehab - she had spinal surgery and the first place she was at dropped her 3 separate times (a place in Essex county). We had her moved to Shorrock because my brother lived in Toms River and heard good things about it. She was severly incapacitated. (We didn't know it at the time but she had cancer in her spinal fluid that was completely separate from her spinal surgery). I felt the staff could have done more for her but now I'm not sure. They were slow in responding to health issues thinking that she wasn't as ill as it turned out she was. In hind sight I'm not sure how much more they should have done. If you are looking I would say to include it on your list.

There is one in Lakewood that is supposed to be pretty good. Its called Leisure chateau on River ave (Route 9 south) in Lakewood. My wife used to work there and she said that the care there is great. Another good thing about this one is that it is close to a hospital. Its around 1 mile away from kimball hospital. This is important in case god forbid she needs to get to a hospital. I dont know if you need it but they offer kosher food there too
