advice on union city and jersey city
Hi all
I will be getting married this month and need some advice on areas in union city, nj and jersey city, nj. Me and my fiance are looking to live in one of those towns but not sure where is best. We are looking for an area with many diversities, safe, and an easy commute to new york city, about 30-35min. We have been looking at some apartments online only in those 2 areas but am not sure which area is safer or better compared to the other and what neighborhoods in those areas are more desireable than others in terms of safety, and convenience. Schooling is not an issue for us now since we are not planning on having kids yet. Any information anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If youy have your hearts set on those two areas I would suggestdowntown jersey city. They have some nice brownstones and the train station at exchange pl should be easy enough for you to get to and will take you straight to new york.

Thanks for the quick reply. but what areas in jersey city are considered downtown jersey city, i.e. within which blocks of jersey city. I have heard that anything below communipaw street is not good. What areas above that street are more desireable? Also, we see alot of new condos being developed in union city and they look to be in better shape than those in jersey city being offered for sale. Is there anything in union city that is not as desireable as jersey city? Thank you for all the help.

Newport isn't that bad either. If you want to know more about JC, you can go on wikipedia. (not that it is the most informative website on the net)

Downtown Jersey City is a great place to live depending on you affordability. The western slope area of the Jersey City Heights offers a nice area of the town with plenty of diverse people. Also close to transportation and Journal Square. Very reasonable rents and home prices. If you guys are looking for a home my houes will be for sale on Western Avenue in the JC Heigeht real soon about a week or two.
Im leaving for the kids they want to live by the beach.
Good luck with your traveles in jersey City Its a fantastic place which is up and coming!

if you can afford the heights section of jersey city, the buildings are historic and beautiful. union city right now is good all around, although you better hurry up and buy now, b/c developers are looking to obliterate most of the city and build yuppie condorises, which means snob-market prices and less of the diversity you are looking for. union city right now is one of the most ethnic neighborhoods you could dream of. i'd hate to see that go. try looking around the part of union city close to weehawken and north bergen it has some lovely old brownstone-like blocks.

New Union City Condos called Altessa
Just heard about another condo building in Union City called Altessa www.altessanj.com. It's a 15-story building with 100 condo residences. They claim to have "magnificent New York City skyline views and exceptional amenities including a landscaped rooftop deck with a swimming pool." Sales are supposed to start in January, with prices starting at $310,000. Anyone know anything about it?
