Occasionally he would be told "it's not a good time, come back tomorrow" and he would just pack up and head to the next job.
was the "guy who ran the block" middle class, lower class, upper middle? upper?

Depending on your choice (I-8, or I-10) you saw, off the top of my mind, wonderful places such as Brawley, Indio, El (Hell) Centro, which actually has about 30,000 people in it, Quartzite, Parker, and IMO, the crown jewel, Blythe California.

The commonality with all these places is transiency. No one is really from these places, they just drift there, pop down temporary quarters, and are off again. In contrast, Camden, Paterson, Baltimore, Philadelphia, these places have generational roots, and a sustained history of tangible, brick and mortar economies. The SW places share in common people who 'winter', surrounded by $8.50 an hour service level employees that work the hotels and fast food restaurants that dot the exit ramps to lure in motorists who just can't drive any further or hold their bladder.
I think we went up to Barstow to I-40 to 95. Went through Needles. I remember going to a In-N-Out in Victorville. I swear, once you get out of San Diego proper and more inland, you can keep it. Wasn't a fan. My one son hates the desert after that trip.

here's the "center" of town where all the "take it easy" crap goes down. it actually looks not bad, but go one block in either direction..yikes.

Barstow is where 40 and 15 converge. Had you taken 15 instead, and your destination was Vegas, you would have rubbed up against another favorite, Baker California, home of $5.50 a gallon gas and a big ass thermometer that prides itself on reaching triple digits.

The thing about this place is due to the great recession, Los Angelinos and San Diegans are not coming to gamble as much, and combined with federal budget stipends to rural areas, these places are now beginning to really take a thrashing. The owner of the thermometer can't even pay his bill any longer to keep it active. Even the pawn shops are going out of business here.

In Camden you can "get you" a block for less then the cost of most suburban houses. As for income, I think I've read something where the local distributor guys like those "block captains" pull in around $75k a year tax free.

Be aware those guys get fired a lot. And when I say fired I don't mean dismissed.
