By "not upmarket" do you mean sketchy and drug infested or just not fancy? I'm perfectly fine with the latter.

Does anyone know anything about Placid Gardens Apartments, 45 S 9th Ave, Highland Park?

It's one of the few things in my price range.

Highland Park is a great option for RU grad students seeking housing. Nice safe community with a walkable downtown area. The Placid Gardens apts are in a nice area, they are fairly old bldgs, but look well kept, though I believe you only have street parking available, so it can be a pain. (I have never been inside them, only driven/walked past them on many occasions.) It is a bit of a walk to the Bloustein School, about a mile and 3/4, and as others have mentioned parking near the school is hard to come by and the town loves to write parking tickets. Perhaps biking would be a good option for you? I should also mention, just for your info, Highland Park has a large orthodox community, and as a result many businesses located in town close quite early on Fri, and are closed all day Sat.

There is some parking behind the buildings that you can't see from the street. It is accessed from 10th street. Your best bet is to come and check out the area.

Thanks memema for the info....I am glad they have some parking in back....it sure is not visable from 9th street. I do always see plenty of cars parked out on the street in front, is that because there is not enough parking in the back for all the residents of the apts?

I really don't know why. I drive by on occasion and noticed the lots. There are garages also.
