Default Driving to Manhattan for work from NJ

I am single/ early thirties and will possibly be taking a sales job in Manhattan covering the entire city and will be given a company car which I need to have with me every day but am wondering where a good place to live is in NJ that is a close commute to Manhattan w/out having to sit in traffic for 1hr every day.

Hoboken and Jersey City seem to come up alot..... I am curious about the commute and how long/expensive it will be each day... they will pay for the car/gas/tolls/insurance so that is not an issue....

Or possibly a place in NYC that would be an even easier commute? I can afford up to $2,000/mo on rent if I really had to....

WHY on earth do you want to drive into the city? Parking will eat up your budget not to mention the time you'll waste sitting in tunnel/bridge traffic. There is GREAT public transportation into Manhattan. You can get other things done while sitting on the bus or train AND you'll save a lot by not having to fork out for gas, tolls or parking.

There are some sales jobs (such as pharmaceutical or medical devices) that actually require reps to drive in and out because of the equipment they need to take with them.

do you need to report in to an office at the start of day? if so, what location? otherwise, you could live near any bridge or tunnel that leads into the city to reduce your commute.

There is no such thing as a place here w/out traffic

How are you going to park your car when you get into manhattan? Are you allowed to double park?

I think you might want to look at some of the closest -- Englewood, Cliffside Park, Fort Lee, Edgewater, Hoboken, and Jersey City (the high-end areas). If you want to start looking further away there are plenty of nice towns, but the commute will truly depend on what time you leave, need to be in NYC, etc. Being in your early 30's and single, I would think you are looking for a place that suits you as a person, and also where you are vis a vis stage in life. Good luck -- northern NJ is a great place to live.

There's plenty of parking in Manhattan- it's all just located in garages under the buildings, not on the street. It's very costly ($30+/day), but it's usually pretty easy to find someplace to park if you just look.

Agreed. And if the company requires the use of the car they will usually cover parking fees too.

I don't have to report to an office each day Just my set accounts for the month and yes I will have a special plate so I can double park in front of each of my accounts

I am just trying to avoid a long commute to work each day, but luckily i don't have to be at my first stop at 9am on the button i can set my schedule somewhat, but not much later than 9am...
