Default There are Mountain Lions in New Jersey.

There are Mountain Lions in New Jersey. My son and his friend saw one and here's a story I placed on the internet about it: MOUNTAIN LIONS IN NEW JERSEY

I also started a thread on City Data about it and it received over 10,000 views. I'll try to find it.

My son and his friend remember, where the mountain lion's den was near High Point Mountain in Sussex, NJ. I told him to stop hiking in the area.

----------------

Due a 'search' on the topic of mountain lions in CITY DATA and read all the strange stories of Moutain Lions, where there should not be mountain lions.

Wouldn't be a bobcat...since they are named for their lack of a tail.

Certainly seems possible that it was a mountain lion...both exciting and scary.

black panther ? at a minimum you should have reported it ,if 100 lbs, this poses an extreme risk to small children and adults

for any of you interested in seeimng mt lions ,go to van saun pk zoo in bergen cnty ,they have 2 there and they are huge ,my guess 120 lbs each an adult would be lucky to escape an attack by one of these animals in the wild

i too have been hearing of mt lions in jersey for 10 yrs now ,and hope i get the chance too see one in the wild ,remember ppl ,if you think you spot one ,report it ,it could save a childs life

I did report it to Wayne Animal Control. I don't think they found it or did anything.

Found tracks up along the ridgeline along the Water Gap two years in a row before I moved out of state ('01). No doubt they are there...but they travel as well.

Numerous sightings in west milford this year. Normally I'd dismiss this sort of thing as failure to properly ID an animal, however the gent who I spoke to is a friend and a capable naturalist.

Mtn Lions are here in NJ. Though I'd imagine many of these "sightings" are actually coyote or bobcat.

Rumors abound, so here's another I have heard mentioned:

1) The state DFGW knows about them because decades ago they brought them in to control the deer herd (ostensibly at the behest of one or more insurance companies!). Therefore, the state wont hurry out to confirm anything, or else they will have to officially deal with the situation.

I practically live in the woods in Sussex County, yet I've never seen a coyote, mountain lion, or a fox. Supposedly it is extremely rare for someone to site a bobcat.

I see black bears once or twice a year (which is not often considering the area) and deer practically every week.

Default Mountain Lion Sussex County New Jersey

I live next to High Point State Park in Wantage New Jersey, just went over the mountain and saw a big cougar or mountain lion by the side of the road. It kinda scared me, but hey nature is nature. I just wont let my dogs out by themselves.
