Default Mountain lions in Jersey?

I was by the old swimming hole in Pequannock of Route 23S two weeks ago by the machine rental place trying to get some good pictures of leaves changing and spotted a big cat with long tail that almost touched the ground about 25 to 30 lbs, beige with big paws the size of a mans palm. It was approx 25 yards ahead of me and veered of into the brush never looked at me. I froze then realized what it probably was. I didn't get a shot (picture of it) some nature photographer I am.
Are there mountain lions in Pequannock? Because I think they are here now.

You sure it was a mountain lion? We have rats around here that fit that description.

Default probably

They were there a long time before we were.
It's very common here in California but I had a friend who lived in Sussex, NJ and said he saw them there. (This was back in '94)

Probably an escaped exotic cat but it sounds too small to be a cougar. They had one running around in Philly maybe 10+ years ago.

There are also a few stories out on the web about mountain lions being spotted in the Vernon area. If they were native to this area in the past, who's to say they can't come back??? Just that no one has photographed one yet.

Mountain lion, bobcat, cougar -- would love to seem all of them . . . at the zoo, LOL. I've always enjoyed the cats, but never really wanted to have to face one, LOL.

There are tons of coyotes in Warren and Sussex Counties. I see and hear them all the time. Have seen bobcats too. Have never personally seen a mountain lion, but know people who have.
