No, you are still side-stepping the value of commemorating that is essential to this country's existence and fabric with its own special day.
I am confident In what I do to commemorate the day. I suspect that you do little or nothing, just as I suspect the same in relation to assisting others after Sandy. if it doesn't touch your little slice of the universe, you give it no value. Again... NPD; it's not attractive at all.
you are impressive with your fake act of self righteousness. i never suggested not commemorating the fallen soldiers. moving it to a weekend day isnt any less commemorative; but you only remember fallen soldiers if you get to take the day off of work to do it.

No, I'm thinking that you wouldn't get around to honoring them if you had the whole month off.
Me? I actually was involved in activities all three days of the weekend that focused on the fallen heroes.

this isnt relevant to the discussion. this holiday isnt about you or me. you are incapable of presenting a reason why the holiday should be observed during the week rather than the weekend. then you want to complain about people not observing it in a manner you deem appropriate.

you always pass the buck to someone else. why don't you present a reason why the holiday should be observed on a weekend rather than during the week?

Take it up with the Federal Gov....by the way are you an employer who has to give the day off and pay employees...just asking
For decades, Memorial Day continued to be observed on May 30, the date Logan had selected for the first Decoration Day. But in 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees; the change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday. For some reason only the 4th of July didn't fall into this Holiday Act
There are many who want Memorial Day to go back to May 30th no matter what day it falls on...

Not relevant? Ha! I think I must have nailed it squarely on the head. You are the only one complaining... get help for your NPD.

i have already suggested that if you give people a day off of work, they will take advantage of it to do something they enjoy. as it stands, you have many people enjoying the day off and many people participating in memorials (many more enjoying the day). then you have a lot of self righteous folk that like to complain about the people enjoying the day. im just throwing out a suggestion that maybe it wont be viewed as a "celebration" and time where you say "happy memorial day!" if it was a weekend day rather than a day off of work. i dont see why someone who wishes to attend memorials would oppose that unless they want to keep the day off for that and weekend for their leisure.
i dont have a problem what people do either way, im addressing the self righteous complainers.

yes, we observe memorial day and a bunch of other holidays. most people see it as an opportunity to be paid to not go to work and enjoy the day.
kate, i see from this post and a past post of yours that (in my opinion) you are mistaking the fact that there is a story for "why we celebrate a holiday" and how things came to be that is considerably different from the real reasons why things happen (like many things in government are). there are their reasons and the reasons they sell to the public.

Your strenuous objections point to guilt that you aren't honoring the most important Americans. That's a good start, but focus inward and make positive changes instead of misplacing your angst on others.
Cap, maybe you should explain why we have weekends anyway? People just lollygagging around. They say they need a day to honor their God, but most (according to you) are just sitting on the couch anyway.
