its not just a paid day off

if you get the chance to explain it to kids why we have this holiday, its a great way for all of us to remember ,without the sacrifices of men and women ,we would not enjoy the freedoms we have today

I wish to thank all who have served and will serve in the future

thankyou

Thank you for posting that.

When my daughter was small and I was a Girl Scout leader, we marched in our local town parade with the troop. They were in kindergarten or first grade, and they'd made a banner and were very excited about marching. To our dismay, they walked through town yelling "HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY!" to everyone along the route, and we realized that we had to have a little conversation with the girls to tell them what this was all about. My dad was still living, and he was a 100% DAV from WWII--lost both legs below the knee, so we used him as an example and talked about others from our town who had died in earlier wars. We kept it simple enough for the kids that age, but we wanted them to know Memorial Day wasn't just about parades and the hot dogs and soda you got afterward at the firehouse. This was in the 90s, when we still had a number of WWII vets in town. They're all gone now.

Lots of flags flying at the cemetery today. It was both sobering and heartening. There are no words to adequately express my respect and gratitude.

I am a veteran.

I didn't 'celebrate' Memorial Day.

I attended Memorial Day services to 'honor' those who gave their all.

What did you do on Memorial Day?

did those Memorial Day services honor those more than anything else that you could be doing to honor them any other day of the year? i doubt soldiers who have given their all wait for memorial day to be honored.

i suppose you mentioned what you did because you feel thats the perfect thing to do on memorial day. i also assume you asked what i did because you would say that what i did wasnt the right thing to do. well, i dont care what you did and what i did isnt your concern. thanks for your service.
