It is a very pretty town though and it does have a fairly tight community. Decent schools and activities if you have kids, close to Newark and NY if you commute and if you don't drive, you still have tons of access to the stores and little shops. It's "center of town" is still cute and sort of quaint (except Shoprite...that's been a madhouse for the past 15 years I think). Keep in mind though, it's probably the only good town left in it's vicinity until you get up toward Verona, so I don't know what the next 5, 10, 15 years will entail.

But we always felt safe there, our neighbors were fantastic, and I'd recommend Bloomfield/Nutley to anyone that can afford to live there!!

Exactly. I've heard rather good stuff about both West Orange, and South Orange. East Orange and Orange, on the other hand....personally, from what I've heard, read, and crime statistics/etc., I'm keeping out of those as much as I can.

From an outspoken young person's perspective... Nutley is alright but has a lot of loud-mouthed, overly haired gelled guidos and b*tchy girls that like to curse and yell over their cell-phone to other girls threatining to steal their boyfriends.. However, the town does have some nice parts =). And there's lots of places where you can get a tan.
P.S. Stay away from Bloomfield. Yes Oak View and Brookdale sections are nice but once your children reach middle school its all over.....

Wow...so much negativity!
Wow, so many bad reviews. I've lived in the Bloomfield/Nutley/Montclair area for about 5 years now and my husband has grown up in the area.
Nutley is a very safe town, yes the areas near Belleville (going into Newark) aren't the nicest to look at but still pretty safe compared to other towns. Nutley is primarily white (mostly Italian), with mixes of asian and hispanic on the "sides" (Bellville/Bloomfield (not Brookdale section) of Nutley.
So is Bloomfield's Brookdale section, also primarily white. The entire area (Nutley/Bloomfield/Montclair/Glenridge) is highly priced...for $350-400 you can get a fix-r-upper, most decent ready-to move in or just paint homes are about $450 or up. Bloomfield is a little less expensive, and Glenrdige/Montclair is way more expensive.
Also, Montclair overall is okay again depending on the section, you go towards the Bloomfield/Newark section and it's not so safe. There are some sections although there n Montclair you can tell by the price of the home you should stay away. Monclair does have a NYC feel, with little store front and open restaurant seating, art galleries and every type of cuisine.
Nutley/Bloomfield/Bellville Anywhere along route 21, I would stay away from, yes the townhomes are beautiful and I've known people who have lived in them and have not had problems, however, the fact that there is easy access to RT 21 is not so great, especially in the complexes that are not gated.
If you go towards Montclair, Oranges, Verona, Caldwells, you are going further west.
As for the oranges I'm not entirely sure. To quote another poster from a different thread:
E. Orange - ghetto
Orange - okay but still not great
W. Orange - mix of black and white families, nice on the Verona/Caldwell side.
All the above are in essex county.
Clifton in Passaic County isn't bad...of course depending on the area/side. On the Nutley or Montclair side, Clifton is really nice.
As for education, the Nutley school still isn't bad. Although I do not have children myself, I have friends who have kids in the Nutley system and they seem to be ok, it's the parents that need to push the kids anyways.
If you like where you are living, buy a car, if you want a change, I would either rent a car for the day or grab a friend who has a car and come to the area and see for yourself, with a map of course. That's how I did it when I moved from NY. It really all depends on what you are looking for and what type of person you are in general (age, race, young, old, etc).
Good luck in your search.

If a person is looking in that area, don't forget to look into Rutherford. It is a nice town with excellent access into NYC. I think the houses are more expensive than in Nutley though.

I lived in Nutley and my family still lives there. I can give you a fairly good perspective of the community because my family is very involved in it. The schools in Nutley are very good. The teachers really care and the standards are very high. Nutley is very commutable to Manhattan. Lots of people in Nutley commute. If you get on an express bus, it is only a half hour to Port Authority. There are trains nearby too, but I'm not sure about their times.
The Parks and Rec. system is very good in Nutley. There are a lot of community activities offered. Nutley is a very tight knit community, there is a large number of Italians. Lots of people in Nutley grow up and buy houses and stay in the town.
There are negatives too, like any place. The biggest negative that I can think of are the politics. The same couple of families have been in control of the town for what seems like most of their history. Their wives and children get special privelidges in the schools, kind of like a good ole' boys attitude. Also the contractors seem to be in with the town government and get what they want as far as getting to sub-divide land.
There is crime in Nutley, just like anywhere else. A lot of crime concerning gangs and drugs come into Nutley from Newark and Bellville. I have family members in law enforcement and I can tell you that there is crime, drugs and gangs in every city or town in NJ whether they want to admit it or not. Hope that this helps
