Went up to Saratoga Springs this weekend. A lot of road work through the Alabany area and a sign caught my eye. Reduced speed in work zone strictly enforced, yeah we have those signs in Jersey too, but then the next one, two speeding tickets in a work zone and your license is suspended!!
After seeing how some moronic drivers speed though work zones with no thought to the men working there I would be all for it ...
No. Any obvious money grabs like this & red light cameras should be fought. Usually they set up cones or barriers to protect workers. If you're going 30-40 over the posted speed limit 2 times, maybe. But going 10 over? Ridiculous.
yeah, gotta protect those workers sitting around doing nothing. they are so much more important than everyone else on the road that we need to give government more excuses to make money to protect them.
More draconian driving penalties only serve to increase the number of drivers driving on the revoked list which then places everyone further in danger when they start outrunning the fuzzolini. No thanks, I'll pass.

I drove through there last weekend. 10 miles of road construction, zero people working.
How about we start with making "work zone" speed limits strictly enacted ONLY when people are working on site? I bet drivers will pay a lot more attention to the restricted speeds when they actually appear to be for a purpose more than 1/10 times you see them, far more than any penalty would.
Worst is the I-78 Delaware River project. Speed limits drop all the way from 65 to 45, and when they're not working, it's a 3 lane road with zero construction. And the limits go into effect 3+ miles before where any work would be being done, further making everyone ignore them.

Agree 100%, 99% of the people will slow down when they see someone working or if they took 1/2 of the road and put up concrete barricades. Putting up cones 3 miles before the construction site is overkill but par for the course.

I thought NJ did what PA does, fines and points are doubled in a construction zone, which I think basically means two speeding tickets in a construction zone would result in a suspended license. Even if you're only in the first tier of speeding (72 or 74 i think in a 65), that'd be 4 points in a construction zone.
PA got serious about construction zone enforcement maybe 10-15 years ago, and i remember countless stories about the accidents plummeting.
I'm all for anything that makes the roads safer, more or less, especially for workers.
Usually there aren't any workers at all, just a bunch of cones and vehicles and a cop with a radar gun.
typically, the fines only apply in an active work zone, meaning when workers are there (often indicated by signs with flashing yellow lights). not sure if that's how NJ does it or not.

civil engineers come up with how to set up a work zone. they don't just throw up 1.5 miles of cones for no reason, that's the distance to safely merge a lane into another for closing a lane. i love how people act like all of this is just pulled out of thin air.
talk to some engineers.
