Has anyone had this happen to them? I read a few people mention this on an email list for a station in West Orange. Yesterday I filled up there and he charged me $5 more than the pump read. He apologized and gave me $5 cash.
Do you call the police? Who do you report this to?
I would start with them, but since it was the attendant that was doing the overcharge, more then likely its Police, but unless they catch the attendant doing it, there is not much they can do.
I would find out who owns the station and tell them, they can fire/investigate it. If it’s a "Brand" name, you can also go to Corporate, and they can get on the franchise owner or the GM (if its company owned.)
I usually pay by credit card and never bother looking at the receipt. Hopefully this is for people paying cash since for card they swipe it right on the pump

The mayor responded and said to file a complain with NJ department of consumer affairs. and he also sent me the BP corporate # (municipal clerk experienced the same thing).
what station if you dont mind me asking so I can be on the lookout should I end up there
It's the BP on Northfield Ave by Turtle Back Zoo. A few people reported this on a yahoo group (west orange water cooler), and I had gone a few times before and didn't recall noticing anything. The station is the cheapest in the area by a decent amount. So I was on alert from those emails and i looked at the pump when he was done pumping. $71.32. They have old pumps, so he takes your card into the station and swipes then brings your receipt. Receipt said $76.32. I was very disappointed. Guy seems nice. It's possible to be a fat-finger error, but highly unlikely given where 1 and 6 are on a keypad.
