That area of Bloomfield is fine. Also consider Montclair. I would stay out of Newark and Belleville. Good luck!

I think a better alternative for you would be to look west, at Verona, Caldwell, West Orange, and Livingston. All will be easy commutes to UMDNJ and are safer.

I would say that area of Bloomfield, close to the downtown historic district is pretty good, especially if you are only renting a room, and travelling by car. The train station is nearby, but you won't need it. Like NYC, one or 2 blocks over can be a whole different neighborhood. prices are still good in Bloomfield. There is a huge re-development just starting around the train station that will make it more active at night, etc. You only have a year left, so you probably won't notice.
