The DMV in California is loaded with incompetency and bureaucracy. It has got to be the poorest run government office in the state.
I recall visiting the office in Pasadena and a sign hung from one of the "teller" windows: "Warning, threatening a State of California employee is a federal crime."
I thought to myself, why? Then I recalled where I was.
Sorry about your poor experience with NJMVC. No one looks forward to going there. My experience at the Oakland Office was good, but then again I am a US citizen.
I am glad you got it straightened out and welcome to the US!
Funny, the Oakland NJ DMV has a police officer standing at the doorway while the DMV dolts cherry pick people off the line in their very sloth like way.
Let it go. If you're boiling over that 2 days later, you may want to consider having your blood pressure checked by a doctor.
get over it? NJ taxation should allow for DMV dimwits handing out tea and crumpets for anyone forced to stand in line...you mustn't have anything better to do then be herded like cattle by ignorant people for half a day. And if you're offended by my statement, get over it
Unless you screw up, there is no reason to stand in line at any state DMV. So unless it involves a car purchase, most of which can be handled at the dealership, you never have to go.
Anything including a license renewal is available online. So that means appearing in person once every eight years.

I just went back from Oakland DMV and got my ID renewed. My experience is not that bad, though I had to go to that place two times to make it done. They could be strict, or maybe too strict in documents. But they are polite and efficient. So maybe it's not totally their fault? Just the rules?
I have been there once about a year ago. Lost my license. In and out in about 20 minutes. Yes things can vary by location and luck.
