One has nothing to do with the other. Say you have to get to work to try to pay off back taxes. Now you have to pay extra money you don't have to possibly take a train & 2 buses? Asinine. Garnish wages or do what they normally do.

There is a provision for getting a restricted license for getting to work.
Overall, I guess this is really targeted at people with cash businesses that they can't otherwise reach for collections.
For anybody with a paycheck or a bank account you'll get garnishment long before you have to worry about this.
I think this just really speaks to an attitude from Albany, obey, slave.
I think you'd also be surprised how many state workers are behind on their taxes.
Why not suspend or fire them?

"i know we all hate paying taxes, but i hate even more paying higher taxes because of people who don't pay their taxes"

Bad idea when you use your car for work and now you don't have a car to earn the money to pay the tax.
Hearkens back to the day when people were jailed for owing money. Society decided that was a stupid idea.

Too much room for clerical errors by DMV, tax collector and resolving computer ized data on so many systems is a nightmare......and now the cops have another excuse to pull you over.

US underground economy in the trillions. Not a peep about going after that money.....even if they did you think you'd pay less in tax?

If the idea of paying higher taxes is abhorent to you, how do you feel about the institutionalized waste of taxpayer money by local, state and federal governments ? Thats why taxes get raised...to compensate for the colossal waste by your elected officials.

Put a lein on your paycheck, done. You might miss the snail mail notice but surely will not overlook the missing money in your check.

It's not really aimed at them. They know those people aren't going to pay. While the proposers relish the thought of putting these people in jail for driving on a suspended license, what they're really after is "deterrence", or more like government-by-terrorism. They figure that if you have the choice between paying taxes and buying food or paying the rent, you might just choose food or rent. But the harsher the penalties for not paying the taxes, the more likely they won't. If you point out that someone who gets their license suspended will have trouble earning money, they'll just go all high-and-mighty and say "Well, they should have thought of that when they didn't pay taxes" -- the inescapable bind is the point, not a problem.

People should not live in an area where there only choice is to drive everywhere and then complain when they dont pay their taxes and the govt takes away their licence that its unfair. YOU BOUGHT YOUR TICKET, deal with it or live near transit/walking distance.

Stop using logic. It will confuse the most of the idiots who post here. Stupid is as stupid does and NJ is the epicenter of stupid, not to mention rude.

Stupidity....sheer stupidity. Someone in hard economic times is struggling to pay their outrageous taxes so the solution is to revoke their drivers license so they can't get to work. Now you not only have someone who is still struggling to pay their taxes but quite likely on their way to unemployment and collecting unemployment/welfare to support their family but maybe even on their way to eventually being homeless. Brilliant !!!

Like I said, government by terrorism. The IRS raised this to an art form a few decades ago when they took kids at a nursery school hostage until the back taxes owed by the school were paid.

(If you owe money, we will lock you up until you pay your debts, even though putting you in jail will make it impossible for you to earn money to pay those debts.)

Similarly, taking away somebody's driving privileges would likely make it much more difficult (or perhaps, impossible) for him/her to get to work in order to earn money to pay the tax bill.

Wouldn't it make more sense to impose some kind of sanction that didn't have the potential to eliminate the income that is needed to pay that tax bill? Offhand, I can't think of another workable sanction, but surely somebody could come up with a better idea than suspending a driver's license.

they would allow special DLs that can be used for back and forth to work only. so they've addressed this issue (at least what is happening in NY State).
