Hello,

I'm a single gay male in his 30s who might be offered a job in the Paramus area. I was wondering how gay-friendly is Fair Lawn or any of the neighboring towns. I'm very low-key, and am not flamboyant in any way, but I just don't want to feel uncomfortable or any sort of animosity.

Thank you.

Fair Lawn is pretty suburban but I think now-a-days people are more tolerant in the north east...not sure where you are coming from geographically though.

It all depends on how the Russian Jews view gays? That's a big part of the community. The rest of the community I am not sure--I imagine it is mixed just like Democrats and Republicans.

As far as the Russian Jews, I imagine they're not very tolerant of gays being an immigrant from the former USSR myself, though not a Jew. Even though it's nice to have those international markets that import/carry a lot of familiar foods.

You shouldn't have any problems. The town is fairly progressive overall.

^ I agree. I married someone from Fair Lawn and knew quite a few people, several of them gay. And I'm talking about back in the 80s and 90s. No one ran them out of town, and they mixed in easily with everyone else. And yes, there are Russian Jews in Fair Lawn, but that's not the whole town. It's a large town with a mix of different types of people. You'd be fine there.

The town has always had a significant Jewish population, Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform. Guess what, some of them are gay. I knew a lot of the Irish-Italian Catholic population who belonged to St. Ann's parish. Some of them are gay, too.

Ridgewood & Rutherford would be more gay friendly but I don't think any gay person would have a problem in NJ's established suburbs.

I agree with the posters above. Also check out the Maplewood/SO area, very diverse, and a large gay population.
