Hi guys;
I am moving from Salem MA to Burlington NJ in few days with Budget rent truck. Last time I went there 3 weeks ago I payed more than $60 (2-ways) from Salem MA to Burlington NJ, much more than my car consumed on gas. Is there any trick on how to reduce the prices of these toll roads? I think it's too expensive, in some places I payed $13! I get nervous whenever I find a toll road and this push me to make mistakes. I'll drive night is the prices the same as daytime?
If you go this way, I-84 to I-684, over the GWB on I-95, the only tolls you will have would be on the NJ Tpike. Which you could take part of the way, say from the Gee Dub (GW Bridge) to maybe 15W then US 1 the rest of the way. https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=S...a=ls&z=7&via=1
So the only real tolls I see are in NJ going that direction. The GWB toll is in the other direction.
You could take different options through NJ which are either longer or slower.
As I mentioned you could take the Pike down from the GWB down towards Newark say exit 15W, get off and take US1 the rest of the way to cut down on tolls in NJ.
Could also take I-287 across the Tap, go further around on the I-287 interstate loop through NJ, etc.
There are also tricks going Southbound in NJ, for instance the western spur of I-95 the NJ Pike, you can exit at the Meadowlands Sports Complex without paying any toll, then take local highways down, or even get back on the Pike off NJ3 to knock off some $$. Don't go back South the way you just came off or the toll booth will hit you for the same fee anyway.
$13 would be the one way toll crossing over the Hudson River NJ to NY which you would get hit going North. Southbound is no toll. It's almost impossible to avoid that except you could go further up, the Tappan Zee Bridge is somewhat cheaper (I-287/87). After that is the bridge on I-84 and probably a number of other options further upstate in NY, don't know what the Bear Mountain bridge costs, but also you are going further out of the way and/or usually slower.
If you are driving just the car you can check Bear Mtn tolls but if driving the truck you won't be able to drive the Palisades Pkwy, etc.
If I was as big a cheapskate as you I'd take I-84 to 684 South to Cross Westchester Expressway West over Tappan Zee to 287 South to Route 1 South to Route 130 South to the Burlington area. Then go local roads.
Be wary of those parkways (Saw mill, Taconic, Hutchinson) in Westchester County (NY). The lanes are narrow and the road can be very hilly. I would take 84 -> 684 all the way to 287 (in westchester county, NY) to 1S (in NJ). This would save tolls but 287 route is very very long, it takes forever. Not sure if you have unlimited miles on your rental truck. Also, trucks are hungry on gas, so your $$ saved on tolls can be easily eaten away by extra $$ spent on gas.

I always thought that commercial vehicles are not allowed on parkways in NY State.
