my advice is to purchase a home within a 10-15 minute ride of one of the sets of parents, if you plan on having kids in the next couple of years (wedding first, i assume).

Prices are negotiable; a house which is tight based on asking price can be quite acceptable once negotiation is done. Before making an offer check comparable sales in the neighborhood to see what's reasonable.

Yeah, both of our parents want to be close for babysitting and cooking dinners...so that is definitely a nice bonus of trying to stay close! Yes, wedding first, one more thing to save for

That's true. Just curious, what are some of the options to be negotiated other than asking price that may help make it more acceptable? The big monthly payments are what we are trying to avoid, mostly from a quality of life standpoint. We don't want the stress of having to worry about bills, etc. weighing on us.

If you are willing to look at Fairlawn or Saddlebrook, right next to those are Rochelle Park. It is a really nice town with a few houses currently listed around the $300K range with taxes between $6000 and $7000.

Yes very different. It is a small town between Maywood, Paramus and Saddle Brook. It is right next to Route 80, Route 17, The GSP and Route 4.
