We do not commute to the city on a daily basis. We would like to be able to get to a train station (or bus stop) and be able to park at any time of the day. We would, however, also like to be able to commute if one of our kids wants to live with us and commute to the city.
Are there any towns where you can park without a permit (or get a permit without being on a wait-list for years)? We'd like to be able to get to the station at let's say 11:00 am, or 4:00 pm and be able to get a spot.
Towns we're considering: West Orange, South Orange, Madison, etc.
Can you always park in Summit? Have heard conflicting stories.
We would also like a relatively easy drive into the city.
Your best bet might be to depend on the Harrison PATH; it operates all the time and has a good deal of parking, and is relatively accessible from many different towns, though during commuting hours traffic can be a problem.
The bus from Willowbrook Mall takes under an hour, :38 minutes on a good day. There is always parking available. Clifton also has a huge lot and free parking. Hardly ever 100% full no matter what time you go.
There are 2 train stations I'm familiar with - Bay St. in Montclair and Orange. Both of these have daily parking for a fee where you don't need a permit, but you need to get there pretty early during the day.
If you are only going to the city once in a while, and need to park in the middle of the day, I would recommend taking the Path from Harrison, Newark, or Jersey City, but you'll need to pay for parking in all those places.
