Eventually you'll have to get salaries up to $90k above.

Edison area property taxes are quite high and the commute isn't cheap either. Monthly NJtransit pass is almost $300/month and it is very crowded too.
70k is not a bad salary. NJ's median income is 72k. There are thousands if not millions of people in this country who "dream" to make that kinda money some day! Let's not get carried away. Not everyone who works in IT or has a white collar job would end up making 6-figures.

70k is a decent salary for someone coming to NJ from India. OP should come by himself, take 3-6 months to get settled and then bring over his family. It is very manageable. Over next 3-5 years he will have an opportunity to switch jobs and make far more than 70k.

I will highly suggest negotiate a higher salary with your employer atleast 85K. It will be very hard to survive otherwise. You may look in Edison because it has more Indian shops etc so grocery will be easier to buy. But as you will be working around Penn Station so travel cost from Metropark or any other station around Edison will cost you $300 a month. Instead you may consider other towns like Secaucus which is only one stop away and will cost you just $116 a month. There are plenty Indians in this town and schools are okay/good. For Indian grocery Jersey City is 15 mins away if you take the bus non peak time. You will definitely need 2 bedrooms with 2 kids and rent in Secaucus varies from $1500 - $2500. It is a small town compared to Edison and it is easy to walk around. To begin with you wouldn't need a car in this town (there are lot of buses) but in the long run yes. Check craiglist for rentals you will be able to save on the realtor fees. Good luck!

It's a terrible salary for someone who has to shoulder commuting costs to NYC and NJ taxes at the same time.

Since when is 70k a terrible salary? And a Path train monthly pass costs $80 per month. Not everyone who commutes from NJ to NY spends $500per month on commute.
