Anyone can recommend kids swimming lessons near Rutherford/East Rutherford? Just moved to the area and don't know where to look. Any suggestion is much appreciated!

I don't know that area specifically, but usually the YMCA offers swim lessons. You might check if there's a local health club with a pool that gives kids swim lessons.

We have tried several nearby including YMCA at Rutherford HS, Safe Swim at Hasbrouck Heights and Up Stream Swim at Lyndhurst HS. I'm not a fan of YMCA, the water is too cold at RHS and it's 6 kids to a teacher!

Safe Swim was ok but the ratio of teacher to student can be 1 to 4. For a 30 minute session, your child would be lucky to have 5 mins with the teacher. During swim lessons, the teacher would take each child individually from a dock and practice with him/her for about 1-2 minutes each time. Each time the child isn't swimming he/she is placed back on the dock with a flotation device attached. It takes time unattaching and reattaching the flotation device on each child 3-4 times during the course of 30 mins.

I also didn't like that every week my child attends class, Safe Swim would have a new teacher in the pool. It's not always the same teacher from the previous week so there's no tracking and training based on a student's progress...

Up Stream swim has a 1 teacher to 3 student ratio for group classes and the students are allowed to sit on the edge of the swimming pool w/o a flotation device while the teacher practices with another child. The teacher is also the same every week so he/she is able to monitor a child's progress and train him accordingly.

Thank much everyone.

Hi kimchee, how do the Lyndhurst HS pool conditions compare to Rutherford HS? For both classes, are parents allowed to stay? Thanks.

Lyndhurst HS has a great pool, newer and better than the one at RHS. The pool is well heated, with parking just outside and across from a nice school field. I'm abit bummed and surprised. Considering Rutherford has such high RE taxes you would think their HS pool and recreational facilities would be better. At RHS we had to find street parking.

Parents are allowed to stay at all the classes above but can't get in the pool. Lyndhurst and Rutherford pools both allow family swim at certain hours. I tried family swim once at RHS but wasn't happy with the experience because the pool was so cold and only two lanes were open which made it very crowded, esp. with everyone near the shallow end.
