I know this is an old conversation but someone recently was interested. IIRC I had to be asked into Honors classes in high school. Asked/recommended. If everyone could take Honors courses it would defeat the purpose of having Honors courses. I only took Honors history all through high school. I took Honors English for a full year and I dropped down to CP (college prep aka normal level) by choice my second year a few weeks into Honors because it wasn't a subject I particularly liked (specifically it was literature) and I didn't want the added challenge in a class I didn't even like.
AP was different. My high school had a "university program" for top students (not sure how or when they calculated that but I think a lot of students went in to high school already chosen for the program) that required certain APs. They were the only students who could take most APs, like for generic classes. But there were some elective APs as well I think open to anyone. I took only one of those (AP Human Geography) and did get the credit for it in college. I think I got a 4 (out of 5) on the AP test.
