Definitely Blizzard of 96. January 1996. Lived in a condo in Helmetta (Middlesex county), and DH had to go on a business trip. I will never forget, it was around 30". Not long before this, he got a job offer for us to move to Miami. He turned it down. After being by myself for the storm, having to dig both our cars out of the parking lot, being holed up for days, I told him, "Tell them you changed your mind. I'm not dealing with this ever again." Of course then it snowed again, after he came home, but only a mere 12" - which he thought was nothing.

We moved to FL in December 1996. We're in CA now, and hearing about all the snow and cold up there - I am NEVER going back. You couldn't pay me all the money in the world.

It was the first time NYC schools closed twice in a month for snow (February 10th & 26th). For some reason the 09-10 winter season gets overlooked.

2011 was pretty bad as well as op stated. Not a lot of snow at once (except the Dec 26th storm). It was just one storm on top if another.

Also the 2008-2009 winter season was bad for people by the Jersey shore and in the southern part of the state I believe.
In February 2011, I distinctly remember the groundhog DID NOT see its shadow and from then on in, the snow storms stopped! Just before that there was one right after the other. Pretty bizarre huh? Remember, every myth has an element of truth.

The 2008-2009 winter was more like this winter. We didn't get a lot of snow, but it was very very cold!

You are correct, Tahiti!
I just checked my oldest tax bills, and--sure enough--my closing was in August, 1996, so the winter of 1995-96 was the really bad one that delayed the construction of my house.

2010-2011. At one point, we had 53" snow drifts in our yard. Hell, and I just came back here from India .

2003-2004 was bad too.

I don't remember anything earlier.

In my lifetime, it was easily the Winter of 1996 ... still the worst I've ever seen.

Hence why my aunt & uncle who live in Palm Beach County only come up to visit NJ during the extreme August heat. I can count on my fingers all the times they have been up here for other family related events other than summer since they moved in FL in 1992.

I can definitely handle it no problem. I came back from CA on Christmas Eve on a late afternoon flight. I woke up on Christmas Day it was COLD but no wind in Hoboken. Felt awesome!

I remember 1996 was terrible. Also, 2011 was "smowmageddon". Don't get me wrong, I think this year is really bad because of the very low temperatures and arctic tundra out there. But as far as sheer snow goes, I think this year has a long way to go.
