I think that unless you live in a place and actually get out of your car and have a real sense of the city YOU ARE NOT AN AUTHORITY ON THAT PLACE, I see a hillside with hard working people, nurses, teachers, social workers, people in school seeking to progress themselves. people have the same desires for thier families as in short hills. there are football games behind the community center, there are frree exercise classes at the community center, there is a library and police department in the municiple building, there are town fairs with free rides, there is story time at the library.

She's selling her house, so she has to play up Hillside. Funny thing is I'm selling a house in Elizabeth and I do the exact opposite. I've actually been accused on this board of being too negative about Elizabeth.
![]() Have I ever gotten out of my car in Hillside? No, not if I can help it. But I can guarantee you this ... She's not taking her lunches at the Popeye's, nor is she spending her Sunday mornings shopping at the 99 cent store, and her precious little ones sure as hell ain't in Hillside public schools. C'mon, she's a teacher whose only living Hillside because of her job? What, there's no schools in Hillside?? If you really care that much about your community, why don't you take your teaching skills and put them to good use at beautiful Hillside High??? Yeah, that'll be the day ... |

moved from upper west side -near central park - 4 yrs. ago. Iniitally i was hyperventilating at the thought of living in Hillside since my first choice was the town over where my bro lives - union township. however, I have to say HIllside has grown onme. My kids love it. Neighbors are not the type to come over with a 'welcome pie' .. but yes they do make an effort at raking leaves or shoveling snow.... sometimes I can be so "NEW YORK" and forgetto return the favor but I'm getting better. BottomLine: HIllside isn't paradise... but it is a nice place to live & raise kids.... at least until I hit lotto...

I moved to Hillside two months ago ... near conant street .. my house is gorgeous =)
Although Hillside is known to have a diverse community, my entire block is either Portugese & White [perhaps 1 or 2 hispanic families]. I feel very safe here but it's way 2 quiet for my family ... probably because we lived in Jersey City most of our lives. Anyway I really do like Hillside but the industrial factories by Central Ave really turn me off .. other than that, it appears to be semi-suburban... |

Seriously, I'm not trying to be a wiseguy, but just because you're section of Hillside can be characterized as semi-suburban doesn't mean the entire city can be classified as anywhere near suburban. The Conant and Westminster sections (which I know well) are certainly not indicative of Hillside as a whole. |

I grew up right next door in Union, and let's just say the people over in Hillside were a lil rougher then us. I wouldn't say it's that bad if you are on a budget, but there is some blight.

I grew up in HS and lived there for 4 years after I was married. For the first 20 years I lived right off 22 near Calvin Coolidge School. After I was married I moved near Hillside HS (closer to Union). When we moved to HS it was a WONDERFUL town, but that was over 25 years ago. Lived in HS after I was married as it was one of the only towns we could afford and where we lived it was really nice. Once we had childern and the oldest was ready to start school I told my husband that we either moved or send our oldest to private school because I was not fond of the school system (even when I attended school in HS). I am out of HS for 10+ years now and we do go back to visit family, but I can honestly say that it's a nice place to visit (because we have to), but would never want to live there again.
Oh yeah, I was friendly with several police officers and at the time we were deciding to move or not several of our "friends" suggested we move out if we could because houses were being burglarize in our neighborhood. |

Live in Hillside off Bloy the last twenty years; the neighborhoods have changed. Hillside has become overcrowded; and from my experience a melting pot is not that easy to live in. Every one has different ways of doing things and the government of the town is not accessible with information so the new residence are not aware of what's required of a town. I am staying because I raised my kids in that town and my house is nice but if I had to do it today, I will not give my block a second look. Hillside is home sweet home to me but the quality of life has taken a nose dive. My block use to be small town u.s.a. now its city living; but we all have to live.
