Yeah, I react exactly the same way. BUT, I know people who buy some of those, and they say it's really good. And certain stores that offer it, like KIngs or Wegmans, I know to be good quality conscious organizations, so the food is likely fresh.
But still, for me, no thanks on the supermarket sushi.

There is a new place that just opened up in Ridgewood called Gen Hibachi & Asian Cuisine. Their sushi is really good. I also like Ho-ho-Kus Sushi Cafe. Really good sushi, always fresh and very reasonably priced.
Have fun!

try Nouveau sushi corp on bloomfield ave in montclair--good sushi, cute town, and they have a bar where you can watch as soon as you walk in, and a dining room further in.

I agree, very good sushi by NJ standards, but I wouldn't call it "moderately priced". It's on the expensive side, but worth it.

I looked at the website, and it was not what I would consider "obscenely" priced. This is about the range where I am looking. Thank you all so much for your ideas so far. This has really helped me out!

If that's the case, I would say to definitely go there. You will only find better if you venture into Manhattan, and I'm sure we could find some places on your "obscene" list there.

Ok what are you looking for? There are tons of sushi joints in NJ. Some vary in quality, but they are all pretty much the same deal. They are invariably owned by Koreans and serve pretty standard menus.
There are only 2 places in North Jersey that I am aware of that are authentic Japanese restaurants. The one if the restaurant at the Japanese grocery store, Mitsuwa, in Edgewater ( Mitsuwa marketplace New Jersey Store). The other is Tomo's Sushi in Little Falls, NJ ( DINING/LITTLE FALLS; Old-School Japanese That Sets Its Own Rules - New York Times). These places are REALLY Japanese though, only go there if you are a serious foodie or know a lot about Japan.

Not a fan of Minado's at all.
It's not a "sit down" place, but Maguro in Rochelle Park is great.
For a "sit down" although pricey & pretentious (but GREAT for a girls night out) is Sushi Lounge in Hoboken. They also opened a place in Totowa recently (right on 46) but I have not been there yet.
I'm very picky with where I will eat sushi too.
