In New Jersey we are not Yankees. To me, it is a baseball team. I am not on that baseball team.

As a transplanted NJ native who now lives in the south, YES, any native southerner thinks Jerseyans are Yankees- and unfortunately, Yankees of the worst kind because they think we are no different from New Yorkers. In fact they think anyone from above Virginia is a New Yorker.
I just laugh and tell them they've never eaten REAL pizza, cheesesteaks, hoagies, italian......... |

We subscribe to the Mason-Dixon line as the border of north/south. But, when we lived in Virginia, several people considered the Rappahannock River the "border". They felt Northern VA and above were yankees.

I've discovered the hard way that saying those words out loud where I am in Charleston is definitely not a very good idea. They are still very sensitive about it. They still fly the confederate flag here. It's not meant to be racist but to honor all of those who lost their lives in the war and pride in their southern heritage. I've learned all this and also that a lot of the deep resentment towards the north stems from some horrible treatment during the Reconstruction period. I have to admit, we weren't always nice to them after the war. This is something I would have never known had I not moved to the South. And no matter how long I live here, I'll probably always be considered a Yankee by some. It's okay, they can call me whatever they like as long as I'm at the beach 9 months out of the year. ![]() |
