Read that the RU faculty has urged the Board of Governors to recind the invitation to Condi Rice as a commencement speaker based on moral grounds and her role in endorsing the Iraq war.
Here is a TARGUM article supporting the RU faculty protest.
"......the Rutgers Faculty Council denounced her selection on Feb. 28. They urged the Board of Governors to rescind her invitation, citing her war record and the fact that Rice “played a prominent role in [Bush’s] administration’s efforts to mislead the American people about the presence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and the existence of links between al Qaeda and the Iraqi regime.”
" To honor someone like Rice, who convinced the American public to back this war and who shares the responsibility for the lives that were lost, is at best embarrassing for Rutgers University. There is a long list of people who are much more deserving of that honor, who are more distinguished, capable, morally superior, intelligent, successful and so on. Despite the fact that a speaker’s invitation has never been rescinded, now would be a good time for the University to prove it is concerned with principle, not precedent."
Based on the rationale of Condi opponents, who else in the realm of national politics would be unable to meet the RU faculties standards for commencement speaker? or who would meet the standards they set forth?
Honestly, even for those who hold the view that the Iraq war was a debacle, this is absurd. If Colin Powell was selected, would they say the same thing? Rice is a highly qualified individual, and a truly interesting person. It would be shameful for Rutgers to turn her away.

A bit of clarity on this matter.
The pronouncement by the so-called New Brunswick Faculty Council to be speaking for the entire 9,000 faculty of the State University is going national. This should not be surprising. We are next door to the Media Capital of the World. NorthJersey.com, StarLedger.com and mycentraljersey.com are all going to be part of the regional feeds that are seen there.
For those who would like to vent your frustration at the "New Brunswick Faculty Council" for their insular performance on this matter, feel free to review the membership at the link below and send them e-mails.
They need to comprehend that their insular actions are doing more damage to this Univeristy than a $35k stipend or having Condi Rice on campus during Reunion Weekend.
Equally, however, I condemn the media in general for the stupid, shallow effort that doesn't even amount to "journalism" relating to research. This group is 0.006 or 6,000th of a percent of the 9,000+ faculty we hold here on the New Brunswick Campus. We would all do well to conduct our own research of articles that catch our attention at this time owing to the horrid condition of our so-called "journalists" and what we actually view as "news."

I take it, that you are not a math major.
