Early 40's/late 30's couple. We will be working in Montclair but we don't think we want to live there. No kids and no car and we need to be able to get into NYC on weekends. We want urban, but we want safe and walkable to mass transportation, cheap eats/cafe's & food shopping. Our housing budget is around $2200 for a 2+ bedroom, pet friendly hardwood floor kind of place. We were thinking downtown Jersey City. Are we on the right track? Is the commute from JC to Montclair too complicated?

There is no good public transportation route from jersey city to Montclair, and even if there were, 2200 is tight for a 2br close to the JC path. You might want to consider Newark.

Well, OP could take the path to Newark or Hoboken and take the train to montclair; or path to 33rd and train from Penn station to montclair. So it is possible. Might take an hour though. Where in Montclair will you be working?

That said, $2200 for a 2br might be tough but it is possible. However you might have to walk a bit to the path downtown or look in the heights/JSQ.

To be honest i would say you would have better luck living in montclair and then taking the train/bus to NYC on the weekends. But JC would be much easier without a car. Though montclair is doable depending on where you work/live.

If you get the train at Hoboken than I believe you have to switch at Secaucus or Newark for another train to Montclair.

Is your office walking distance from the Montclair train station? Keep in mind that you have to get to / from the train stations at both ends of your trip.

Seems to make more sense to live close to work & not commute every day.

When you want to go to the City than the train from Montclair will take you to Penn Station, or there's a bus to the Port Authority.

There's also two train stations, Montclair Heights, and Montclair State University Station.

I always vote for less commuting !

FYI there are 5 train stations in town: Bay St, Walnut st, Bellevue ave, Mountian ave and Montclair Heights

I was going to say the same. But, as PP said, there are more than two train stations, and some take less than 40 minutes to get into the city (weekdays, anyway).

PATH or light rail to Hoboken, then to Montclair works. PATH to Newark requires a light rail transfer between Newark Penn and Newark Broad. PATH to 33rd is going WAY out of your way.

A couple with no kids? Get a 1-bedroom in Hoboken for $2200, walk to the train to Montclair. Here's the train schedule: http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/rail/R0030.pdf

Six, actualluy: Bay Street, Walnut Street, Watchung Ave, Upper Montclair, Mountain Ave, Montclair Heights.

And I agree, Hoboken, or just Manhattan, would be easiest to do the reverse commute and not own a car at all.

You can live near downtown Montclair with no car, but its still severely more limited than Hoboken or the city. We live here and rarely leave Montclair's borders for anything, but we do use our car to go between the town's four or so downtowns.

OP here... Not interested in Hoboken - it's a party/twenties scene.
We need 2+ bedrooms so one can be a shared office.
Thanks for the info -- it does seem like JC is a hassle for the Montclair commute.
Anyone have any intel on the Parkway Lofts? They look good online, just not sure if they are actually in a barren wasteland at the edge of Bloomfield.
