Thank you, everyone! I have lots of choices to look at now. I use VRBO.com all the time, but just didn't know where to look. I am OK with crowds, just didn't want to find ourselves in the middle of a party scene.
Cape May, Long Beach Island, or Delaware (Rehoboth Beach / Bethany Beach). We've come to prefer Delaware beaches if going for more than 3 days. More to do there, nicer places to stay, outlet shopping, good restaurants, dolphins, fun attractions for kids but not as overdone as NJ shore boardwalks.

I love Cape May! It's so pretty.
I really would love to go on one of the dolphin/whale watching trips! I also really want to take the Cape May-Lewes ferry ride sometime. And the Cape May Zoo.
I love the "painted ladies" of Cape May -- the spectacular Victorian houses. I can't wait to go back!
I wouldn't look as far south as Wildwood or Cape May. With the traffic on the Garden State Parkway and Route 9 in the summer, it could take hours for someone to drive there from Toms River. I'm not very familiar with the beaches to the north, so I can't recommend one. I would choose either Long beach Island or Ocean City.
We're going to Diamond Beach for a week with the fam. Never been but I've heard good things! I would avoid the "shore house" towns of Seaside, Manasquan, Belmar and Point Pleasant. Not that they aren't awesome beaches/towns it's just that they are just swimming in wasted 20-30 somethings on weekends.
