Been lurking on the board for a while, hoping the community might help us with our search...
My wife & I and our two sons live on the Upper East Side and are looking to move to the "Burbs", probably Jersey, as we have a many friends and family clustered in Northern NJ.
As the title says...we want it all:
>Big House (4+ Bedrooms, 4k sq ft) with good land and separation from our neighbors
>A Great School System
>An Easy (relatively) commute...ie no more than 1:15 from the house to the East side of Manhattan (Midtown).
Our Budget is up to 1.5 with taxes of 20k. Less purchase price if taxes go up. From what we've found looking:
Franklin Lakes / Mahwah / Upper Saddle River: Everything above, but the commute scares us
Ridgewood: Better commuting options, great schools, much smaller house/land (and on top of your neighbors) and higher taxes.
We're open to anything and anywhere. Seems like the biggest challenge is the commute. We are willing take take a bus, take a train, take a car...take a combo of all 3. We just don't want to spend 1.5-2 hours each way, every day.
What about Madison, Chatham, and Harding? There are some nice properties in Madison and Chatham that fit your criteria, although, for the most part, houses may be just a little too close for your comfort.. In Harding, you get lots of land, and you aren't too far from the train station in Madison (which, by the way, takes just about an hour to get into NY Penn). Also good about these towns is the taxes are generally on the "lower" side.
Also, check out New Providence and Berkeley Heights. Mountainside may also be a good fit, but there is no train there. However, you can drive the 10-15 minutes or so to the Summit train station which will take about 45 minutes to get into NY Penn.
OP - You might want to post your question in the Westchester (NY) forum. I would think that should offer a better commute to Midtown East via Grand Central.

ANY ADVICE AT ALL WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATED.
What time do you have to reach work and when do you leave? I commute to midtown everyday from Ridgewood. It is doable in much less than 1:20 depending on the time.

I get in at 730am. My wife gets in 930. I think i'll be ok, but I'm concerned about her....
