Will you have a car or do you just prefer taking public transportation? That will have a big impact on where you should live.

I will have a car but would prefer to just walk to the train station. I have been looking for areas around trains that go into the newark, but I don't know the good from the bad, so I am just looking for some help. I will be going to check out a place in Jersey city sometime soon, however I do not know how safe the area is I just know it can be sketchy.

JC is a large city with lots of various neighborhoods. Some are nice, some are not.

If you post what buildings and / or neighborhoods you are looking at than I'm sure people will comment.

I know your looking for something cheap and easy commute, but you might wanna think of your quality of life outside of work too.Newark and most of the area around it are overpriced slums and the other towns around their are for the ultra rich elite. If you want a descent quality of life, and some pocket change on rough months considering the extra expenses in renting, utility bills, laundry, commuting costs, food, going out money, extras to buy for apartment, consider weighing your ooptions.

I would try looking in budd lake, eagle rock, henson village area , the trains right their, very nice safe spot and your maybe a 45 to hour train trip to newark, morris county areas in your budget and fairly safe , trains all over their.I wouldnt suggest jc , hoboken, or new brunswick over the top expensive and too much noise , congestion, ghetto neighborhoods around every corner who wants to live around that?

You should also take a look to see if your work location is closer to the Broad St station in Newark or Newark Penn station, since different train lines go to just one of those stations.

Op. If you are not used to living in gritty urban area...get a roommate and find a place on JSQ (journal square) in Jersey City.

Try places in Belleville, particularly the Silver Lake section in Belleville. Silver Lake has a light rail station that takes you to downtown Newark and Penn station. Bloomfield is a nice place to live in. You can park at the parking lot near the Grove St light rail. Train ride from Grove St to Penn station is about 20 minutes. There are several 1BR apartments available in Silver lake and Bloomfield ranging from $900 to $1150
