So they have visited the area a few times to get a feel for what it would be like to actually live there? That's good but it worries me too that your friend is apprehensive about it. Before we really pulled the trigger we came down one last time and drove around neighborhoods at night, in the morning, etc. We wanted to get a feel for the day to day living that you don't normally see when searching for a home with a real estate agent for example.

And the nice weather is great, but if you have a wife who is sitting in her nice home miserable there's going to definitely be problems.I really believe that EVERYONE in the family has got to be enthusiastic and on board when you move that far away from your home base.

I agree. If my husband told me he didn't like a particular place....I'd stop looking there. Sometimes people just get a "feeling" and you need to go with your gut.

When it happens to you too, you'll feel the same way. Just wait until you post an opinion that is widely unpopular (yet still well within the TOS). You'll see what I mean.

WOW there is too much to read. I don't even know if I replied here or not LOL

But listen here is my situation:

DH lost job in 2005 and we have 4 kids. Had the same $3K mortgage in Hunterdon County NJ where taxes were 8500 at the time.

We sold fast and headed to NC to buy something affordable. We got and this is no lie:
.55 acre 2200 sq ft house in a culdesac BRAND NEW in a nice area of Wake County (Willow Spring) and the taxes are like $1500 a year and we paid $194K at the time.

Things are changing .. but not tons. You can still walk in to a nice home here for under $250K and have similar sizes of home and lots. Taxes vary place to place but not higher than 2500 in this area.. maybe in Cary they are.

Oh and combined.. my dh and I make about $62K a year.. ish. I work part time.

NCmommy..

p.s. DM me if you need to ask me more stuff.

NCMommy - You got a good deal, but I think I did even better - 2851 sq ft for $184K but my taxes are $2200. I live in a city so my taxes are higher, but it's nice to have a paid fire dept and good police dept. My master bed/bath area is 850 sq ft. I'll move back to Jersey when it offers a similar deal! LOL

205k for 3 beds, 2.5 baths, 1800 sq ft brand new home with a wrap around front porch and a 24 x24 detached garage with heating, cooling and an attic. $1100. a year for property taxes. $1200 a year for home owners insurance.

Okay, we bought a model home so the garage was already converted.

Buying the home owner's policy was wild though. I had to buy hail and earthquake insurance in addition to everything else. We're 27 miles off the coast of Charleston.

imperieux - I pay $450 for HO insurance. I guess they figured you're in prime hurricane territory. I wonder what those people who live in Harvey Cedars or Loveladies pay on the Jersey Shore? You still would have to admit it's a lot cheaper that what my Florida neighbors (crying as they mentioned it!) paid for their HO insurance.
