W broad is busy, but having lived in NYC for a few years, we would be ok with a busy street so long as the property had a decent sized back yard. Thanks for the info re: McKinley, that was one our biggest concerns.

I wrote about the schools in an older post - Wilson is perennially ranked the best but the McKinley parents tend to rave the most about how happy they are. Disclaimer: my kids do not have any experience w/ either of those schools but that's what I hear.
Neon's post made me laugh, tongue-in-cheek as it was. There are lots of nice sections on the south side - take a drive around the Stoneleigh Park circle. I have not encountered any of the snobs that posters from other towns claim live all throughout Westfield. Westfield may not be a hippie/granola type of town but it is a very wholesome pro-family town with a lot of people with good, solid church-going values.
Some of the houses on West Broad have good fences w/ trees to provide some barrier, but you're right - if you can handle Manhattan, West Broad is nothing. I remember the first time I slept at a friend's apt. in Manhattan - the noise from the traffic explained why it is called the city that never sleeps. West Broad has less traffic than Central Avenue, though.
Best of luck - I hope you find good value with mortgage rates so low! See you in Trader Joe's!
