I haven't paid to be on the beach in over 20 years. We either go to Wildwood or I mooch off my family's season badges.

We paid by having a beach house, paid taxes all year when we only used it from June through Sept.

To the above poster who discussed the issue of mean high water line - that's not uncommon in many states. Beaches are accessible by boat - especially good for low tides, but sunbathing without floating away was a little tricky during high tide.

Have you read the thread? They probably earn their money for beach maintenance through additional taxes. There are a lot of hotels in Wildwood... and all those piers with water parks and amusement parks.

Beach towns like Seaside Park with nearly no hotels or attractions charge directly for beach badges because they don't have much else going on, no "hidden fees" if you will. It's mainly residential, and so are most shore towns. Wildwood is an exception. So is AC.

Didn't say property tax - sales tax. Which goes to the Treasury for state use.

One state use would be opening up & maintaining the beaches. I don't trust the little Napoleonic mayors - who oddly hate money-spending BENNYs to begin with - to do the right thing for the vast majority of shore visitors who don't live there.

One thing I do agree with is the "Benny" hating. Our dollars give these beach towns revenue, and keep their small businesses open. Yet some residents don't welcome us. The "Benny go home" stickers on some cars bother me. Not sure why I am considered a Benny anyway when I've lived in NJ (Union County) all my life and have had family living in the shore area (Brick, Point Pleasant Beach, Ocean Twp) for 20 years. I'm not a resident of a beach town, but I'm down there often enough all year round and I am always respectful to the people and land. Can't we all just get along?

I think the real bennies are non NJ residents to be honest, if we're going to play that game.

I am surprised no one brought this up....

Looks like NJ $$ are funding your beaches in SC.
