I was doing a drive-by of a house in Bernardsville this past weekend. As I drove down Center Street, I saw an unkempt house with a young woman and her baby on a porch that had a bench press on it. I was taken a bit aback by this.

I am house shopping and was wondering about this street and the neighboring streets. I am not too familiar with this town, and this was not remotely close to my impression of the town.

Are there areas to stay away from in Bernardsville?

Has to be a joke. Yeah, that area where the homes are under two million might be sketchy!

Like many wealthy towns, Bernardsville has a section for the "help," Latino in this case. Low wages equals smaller and less well maintained homes, but I'd hardly call it bad.

As for the bench press...maybe someone just wanted to work out and get some sun?? Hardly seems like a quality of life issue.

Stay away from those neighborhoods with the 5 Series BMWs... low class indeed...

That general area of town the homes are quite close together and generally are in the 369K to high 400K range. A bunch of the older capes have been updated and expanded greatly so are now worth more. It is fairly near areas where you will find much higher priced homes that are on acreage. It is the "poorer" section of town, but certainly not an undesireable area. You'll also find older small homes just the other side of 202 (aka Mine Brook Rd) as well. Many people think all homes in Bernardsville are multi million dollar estates, which isn't the case at all. There are plenty of old smaller homes on city lots on all sides of Olcott square, and behind the HS, as well as in the neighborhood just east of the train tracks.

If there's a "bad" section of Bernardsville, we are all doomed.
