Hi, my partner and I recently viewed an apartment in Jersey City. Everything looked good until we realized that there was no refrigerator. We asked about it and the superintendent (who happens to be a friend of a friend) said that refrigerators aren't always included in apartment rentals and that we would have to buy one.

We've been renting for ten years from several different landlords in PA and a fridge has always been provided; is this situation normal?

thanks for reading.

It's not normal, but I've seen it. If you're interested in the unit, I'd try to negotiate it in. Otherwise, I'd walk. I wouldn't buy a fridge for a rented apartment.

Okay, thank you. I'll take that into consideration.
Perhaps I can get the rent knocked down a bit for the first year in this case.

Any other opinions?

I've seen it in some older buildings or from private landlords when looking at apartments with affordable rents. I have a friend who act. purchased a fridge for her first apt (wasn't provided or she said it was so crappy it wouldn't keep her meats frozen or something) and has brought it with her to her later apt's.

When I had to replace my fridge, I paid about $500 at Sear's for the cheapest regular white fridge. My friend told me I got ripped off and should have gone to those used appliance stores--she said she's seen my fridge going for $50-100 and she paid only $250 for her fridge which retailed over $1000, and it's still going strong 5 years later. I'll give that a try next time lol.
