Ok so we currently are renting in Whippany. We just moved here from PA for my husband's job. We really like the area but are trying to get a feel of the surrounding towns (including East Hanover, Florham Park, the Caldwells, etc) so we have a better idea of what to buy when the time comes (which will probably be early summer this coming year). Can someone enlighten me on what parts of Caldwell are more desirable, the differences, crime, etc. From first glance it just seems to be that it's one big town but just different areas of it. I can definitely drive around to get a feel but was wondering if people had any opinions on the different parts of those towns. I have 3 young boys so it would just be easier if I had a head start with what was a good area, etc before we drove around it one day. TIA!

The three different Caldwells are: Caldwell, North Caldwell and West Caldwell. Both Caldwell and West Caldwell are middle class with nice downtowns, while North Caldwell is wealthy with no downtown. They are all suburban with very little crime and good schools.

The more attractive, walkable downtown is in Caldwell. You might also consider Verona which is middle class, next to Caldwell and has a walkable downtown.

Hasn't Verona becoming more upper-middle class?

We like the Caldwells very, very much. The downtown, the people we know there (in West Caldwell), and our daughter who went to camp which was on Caldwell University's grounds.

The NY Times reported that the average single family home there sold for $459,000 in 2011.

Middle Class?

North Caldwell is much more upscale than the other Caldwells (the median income is almost double the median income of Caldwell), but all of them are nice towns.

Middle Class?
Everything is relative. In Northern NJ, a couple made up of a cop and a teacher for 10 years can afford a house that costs $459. Are they "upper middle class"? Maybe. I don't know. It seems these terms have lost all meaning.

Caldwell has a decent little downtown. Had a very good tapas place.
