I've been dealing with this issue since I was 18. It only occurs when I am taking a nap during the day. I wake up, can only open one of my eyes, and am unable to move or speak. In the beginning it only lasted up to 2 minutes and was tolerable. Now it has lasted as long as 45 minutes (I imagine, it is hard to keep track of time). It is terrifying. It has probably happened around 10 times in my life, that I can remember.

*I should mention that I have never experienced demons, or a pressure on my chest as many people say they do during these periods. All that happens to me is the inability to move. I am not sure if I actually move...I certainly feel like I am. But when I look at my body it is not moving. I have always been alone during these periods so I can't ask anyone how I look.

Also I am 25 and not overweight

Basically does anyone know of a specialist in the NYC/NJ area? My health insurance doesn't mention anyone in the area but I am getting desperate at this point.

First, stop taking naps during the day.

Second, go see your primary dr and have them run whatever tests are necessary and recommend a good therapist.

Start with your primary doc. Check if your insurance requires a referrel to a specialist, or that the specialist be in-network to your health insurance.

You may want to get a sleep study done. But, your primary doc is the place to start investigating what causes this & how to fix it.

I know nothing about any specialists in the specifics you are experiencing, but I do know that those who are experiencing any kind of dis-ease improve when they become rebalanced. Perhaps the best & easiest way to do this is through the technique of 'Earthing' (AKA: Grounding) . . .

"Re-connection with the Earth's electrons has been found to promote intriguing physiological changes and subjective reports of well-being. Earthing (or Grounding) refers to the discovery of benefits—including better sleep and reduced pain—from [either] walking barefoot outside or sitting, working, or sleeping indoors connected to conductive systems that transfer the Earth's electrons from the ground into the body. . . .

"Mounting evidence suggests that the Earth's negative potential can create a stable internal bio-electrical environment for the normal functioning of all body systems. Moreover, oscillations of the intensity of the Earth's potential may be important for setting the biological clocks regulating diurnal body rhythms . . .

This paper reviews the Earthing research and the potential of Earthing as a simple and easily accessed global modality of significant clinical importance:
