On the other hand, when it is shown that the possible hazard was not a hazard at all, then the-powers-that-be are criticized for taking precautions.

Think about it...If you were in charge of The NJSP, would you be willing to automatically assume that the mysterious suitcase on the side of the road presented no dangers whatsoever? If it turned out that you were wrong, would you be prepared for the criticism and the lawsuits?

As I said, it is a classic, "Damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation, which means that you can't make everyone happy.

i see things on the side of the road every single day. a suitcase? c'mon. i think if it exploded there would be some lunatics who cry government incompetence. but i don't think they'd win any lawsuits.

but - if it gets called in as suspicious, of course NJSP has to respond.

I now know how to get rid of roadkill that they leave for weeks.

what about those days when the shoulder is suspiciously clean and there's odd looking black bags every 10 yards or so? seems like a plot to destroy the entire shoulder of a major interstate!!!!

Especially when you look and see the sort of people who have been placing those bags... they look like hardened criminals!

All I know is that I was stuck in it for 2 hours. No fun for me that day.
