For this particular bus how do fares work? cash? what's your equivalent of a metrocard?

i know my mother in-law takes a short white or blue bus into the city that goes on route 3. I still have to ask her what is about.
Yes there is a parking lot right by the bus stop where I catch it at least. The fare is cash, and I don't have a metrocard so I don't know. I rarely ever take trains or anything like that, the short bus you are referring to also goes the same route as the 190 bus and they come pretty frequently also. I take them sometimes going go nyc instead of the 190 and it is the dame price. It judt might be less comfortable since it is smaller and more likely to be fulled to capacity.

You can pay cash from NJ to NYC, but you'll need to have a ticket from NYC to NJ. Avoid the long lines at the ticket machines/counters at NYC Port Authority by asking for a round-trip ticket when boarding at NJ. You can also buy 10-trip tickets or a monthly pass at Port Authority. Note that NJ Transit buses will honor monthly train passes (that go to the same zone), but trains don't honor bus passes.

I recommend taking the train if possible as it's far more reliable than the bus lines. And with a train pass, you'll have the option of taking the bus should there be any train issues.
