I'm surprised there have been no votes for Fair Lawn in this thread. Is Waldwick that much better than Fair Lawn?
Having lived in both towns, I can tell you, no, it's not. They're both good towns. Waldwick is a lot smaller, a little more affluent, and has a bit more prestige, but I think that may have more to do with its location (surrounded by all affluent towns, as opposed to Fair Lawn, which is surrounded by more of a mix) than the town itself. Fair Lawn's high diversity may scare away some old-school people away too.
I find the housing stock to be pretty similar in both towns - sections with smaller, older capes, and other sections with fancier, more elaborate houses. You're not likely to buy a mansion in either town, but both have nice higher-end housing if you want it.
The schools in both towns are comparable, and Fair Lawn is quite a bit more affordable than Waldwick. (That little bit of extra prestige costs $$$.) $600,000 wil get you something decent in either town, but it will go farther in Fair Lawn.

While there are a quite a few similarities between the two towns, Waldwick is a little bit more affluent and considered more prestigious since it is surrounded by far wealthier towns. Waldwick is also prettier than Fair Lawn and has a nicer downtown. Fair Lawn is sort of a mix between middle class southern bergen and upscale northern bergen, and really kind of a diving line between the 2, so it's location has far less "snob appeal" than Waldwick.
Yes, no doubt the flooding issue comes up when you look at Pompton Plains, but the reality is that there is only a small portion of Pompton Plains that floods, which is Jackson Ave and south, west of the old railroad bed. Looking at a map, they are easily avoidable, and you know whether the house is in risk of flooding simply based on the price of the home. Also, the last time it flooded was Irene which was a record flood so it is even rare that in the zone I just mentioned that some of those homes may even get water, so the flooding issue is way overplayed by some people. On the issue of schools, Waldwick's middle and high school is ranked lower than Pequannock's, but the elementary schools in Waldwick are ranked higher. Hillview ES in PP also has a Blue Ribbon so the ones in PP are far from bad. That being said, I answered the OP's question of which towns are like Waldwick and Pompton Plains is definitely similar. Either way both are great and charming little towns.

Besides the schools both being good I don't think that they're really comparable at all. Some of FL feels like an extension of EP...and that's not really a compliment. Broadway, unless it's been fixed up since I was last there, is an eyesore. Then you have the whole Paterson border issue. I am biased coming from Waldwick, but I honestly wouldn't even look at FL if I had a certain amount I was able to spend.

I married a Fair Lawn guy. Two of his friends married Waldwick girls. They referred to our two towns collectively as 'Hooterville'.

Cmon - it's not Mahwah.
I worked with two brothers who lived by River Rd. They said if they didn't lock up their bikes they'd magically make their way across the Passaic.
