We are currently living with my dad in West Windsor and the taxes and prices of the homes are way out of our reach. We would like to find a nice home with good schools for our 4 year old for less than $300K. Property taxes are also a big thing is there anywhere less than $3,500????? We are thinking of leaving the state but feel that may be jumping if we don't check this state out first. Anybody have any suggestions.

Your job should be a consideration when moving, whether in state or out of state. Cost of living is very important, but you need a paycheck no matter how much housing costs. Other states have reasonable housing and property taxes (NC/Upstate NY) but can you get the same salary you are earning now?
You may need to go down to the southern counties of NJ. Burlington, Salem, Cumberland, Atlantic etc. I don't know about the taxes being that low anywhere...but you can probably find a starter home for that price range. Try Bordentown, but the taxes are closer to $5000. Good luck

I hate to sound sarcastic but if you can find it please let us all know as that is a major reason we lost almost 70,000 people from New Jersey last year.
Wow isn't that sad!!! Stay in New Jersey and you work to live. Thanks for your help.
There are many more positions for well-qualified professionals with highly marketable skillsets here in the NJ/NY/CT area than there are in Raleigh or Atlanta or Charlotte or Austin or whatever the destination-de-jour happens to be. You can live here comfortably with the right credentials.

the cost of living in those places is much lower than in NJ, the trick is to make the same amount of money as you could in the NY/NJ region and live in those other places. It's hard to accomplish but not impossible, and as long as you don't crave good pizza or bagels the quality of life is great and you're away from the obnoxious NY types

Yeah I had an offer to take my NJ salary and move to SC last year. My wife wanted to take it but I demurred. My reason - my employer would have been one of the few games in town and I'm not a company man. I like to move around, I like the variety, it helps me keep doing what I want to do (workwise) and not do what my company wants me to do (who wants to do SOX compliance work? eeks!) and, let's be honest, I like the 10-15% base pay jumps that come with moving around. Life in SC would have been a condemnation to lifelong income mediocrity.
I noticed that you were looking for places to bring up your 4 year old. Have you researched Winchester, VA. It's an hour and a half from DC, but the prices (especially right now) are very reasonable. The city has great schools and private ones as well for a resonable cost.
