If you get on 80 from panther valley/allamuchy around6 their shouldnt be much traffic.Theirs also a way to go over a mountain by hackettstown and dumps you by morristown. My friend who lived in Port Murray use to take it and said it took roughly 35 -40 min to get to the morristown area but I cant recall the roads.I guess check a map out of the area
Most likely Schooley's Mtn road to 513E. There's no way from Port Murray it took 35-40 min. I'm closer and even with no traffic it's about 45.

Traffic from Allamuchy is bad. It starts backing up around the Stanhope exit. I lived in, and just outside, Panther Valley for 11 years, and the traffic to Morristown was horrendous.
I go through Port Murray and down the "mountain" from the Washington (Warren) area to Morristown in the event of a large accident being reported on 78. It takes at least an hour to go that way. Traffic really backs up through Mendham Boro. School buses galore too. However, it's better than sitting on 78 for 2 1/2 hours though.

I agree with Tahiti, no way is it possible you can get from Port Murray to Morristown in under 40 minutes unless you have a helicopter or jet pack. Heck I live 10 min W of the green in Morristown and it takes me ~45 min to get from my home to downtown Hackettstown going Rt 124 to Rt 513 to Schooley's Mt Rd non rush hour/non weather troubles. I bet the friend also gets greater number of miles per gal than the EPA sticker indicates for his car
Rt 78 stacks up in the morning from exit 12 (Perryville) where I get on, all the way to exit 24 (Whitehouse). It will then jam up again where it crosses 287. 287 North in the morning can also be jammed up. If you get on 78 early, its not THAT bad. I would try using one of the iPhone apps like Waze, and see which route it tells you is the best. Its very good at determining the travel times based on other wazers out there.
I'm not familiar with your area so I'm not much help but I just wanted to say that 287 North really isn't too terrible in the morning when I take it. I get on at Exit 39 at around 7:45. Not sure about the stretch from 78 up though! I commute from the Morristown area to Montclair so I know how hellish the major highways can be. 287 is fine but 80 is a whole other story.

At what hour are you traveling? It rarely takes me more than 12-15 minutes to get from exit 17 (Clinton) to exit 29 (287). This is between 6:30 and 7:00 am.
