Default Bus commute from River Edge

Does anybody commute to NYC by bus from River Edge area? How reliable is the bus service? According to njtransit.com the ride is 45 min. Is this close to reality?

Default Bus can take a while

Hi there,

I don't live in River Edge but my husband has commuted by bus from New Milford (close to River Edge) and Rochelle Park (also in Bergen Coutny). There are express buses that run in the mornings, and these are okay, but don't forget the bus is fighting the same traffic that the cars are. If there is an accident or traffic jam you will have to sit on the bus along with everyone in their cars. There is a bus only lane as you approach the Lincoln Tunnel in the morning but there is not one in the evening.

My husband's experience has been so-so. Sometimes it has taken him two hours to get to work with a bus that is supposed to take 45 minutes. This is happening more and more it seems.

The positive about the bus is that you can do things on the ride that you can't do if you are driving. Computer work, reading, etc.

45 minutes is a good estimate if there is not any traffic, which, unfortunately, almost never happens.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Reliable as long as you have time on your hands. I make the commute to NYC every day and have hated it since day one.
It's about 17 miles to the city and shouldn't take that long, but it does.....regularly......and if there's an accident...forget it.......
It is reality.......

A lot depends on what time you take the bus. I don't know anything about buses from River Edge but my neighbour takes a bus from Ridgewood to NYC every day. He usually takes a bus between 6:45 - 7 am and he never has any problems (unless, of course, there is major accident, which, according to him rarely happens at that hour). He said that couple of times, he took a later bus around 8 am and it was a disaster.

So, if you're willing to take an early bus, you'll probably be OK.

Don't foget you have NJT rail service too from the large North Hackensack PNR (which is technically SE River Edge).

I would look into the train. River Edge has a station it is called ( north Hackensack stop). It's over by the old Huffman Koos, off of Grand Avenue.

My wife takes the train into Hoboken from River Edge (about 40 min ride) then hops on the path into Manhattan (about another 15-20 min). It's independent of traffic and is usually reliable. The bus is usually hit or miss when it comes to traffic.
