South Paterson
I remember driving through the Middle Eastern section of Paterson a decade ago and being impressed by its vitality. Does anyone have any info on quality of life there, crime, and attitudes towards non-Arabs living in the area?

The area seems to be growing and getting stronger. There is new construction taking place in the heart of it. I don't know what it is going to house. I've been there a few times to dine and shop. People seem to be very, very friendly toward folks like myself who don't have the same ethnic background. I don't have any hard statistics on crime in that area except for hearing the random story about police using excessive force toward them. My gut tells me the community is pretty law-abiding.

I remember in the 60's and early 70's the Police using excessive force, all with the wrong kids, maybe we were hanging about a store talking, we never talked back or showed disrespect to them but they were always hard on us.we were afraid of them.

I know you were looking for the information quite some time ago, but coming from south paterson, it's pretty decent over there. Though the area is getting worse and worse, safety wise. And also the arab population is still quite high but the spanish population is beginning to rise. I haven't seen or heard of any specific stories of excessive force but i myself have been given tickets for unjust causes (im not arabic and come off as white/columbian). Other than that, there has been gunshots around. A car across the street from my house was fired at 10 times, don't know the cause. And i do hear gunshots every now and then but for the most part of it, i don't even notice them, sad to say, but i don't spend most of my time in south paterson so that would add to the gunshots.....

What part of South Paterson are you talking about? ^^^ Around Saint Joe's, it is sketchy (around Mary St. for example.) Further down Main St., South Paterson is better. This is the more Arab/ Middle Eastern section of South Paterson; the area the more people tend to think of when they hear "South Paterson". (usually south of Montclair Ave/ west of Getty Ave.)
