I took a route diversion from NJ Turnpike before entering towards Metlife Stadium. There was a sign board "Ramp Closed". I did not notice the same as I was going based on GPS directions. I was issued a ticket with section as 39:4-81.
Am not sure if there will be any points to this. How do I find out if there are points. I dont mind paying the fine of $85, but am worried about the points. Is it worth going to court? Please suggest.
I am only about 10 months in the US and totally depend on GPS to move around.
39:4-81 Failure to observe traffic signals* (Red Light Camera- 0 pts.) 2 *No points assessed for red light camera violation
I'm wondering if you mean that ramp when you're going South on the Western spur of the pike there is a ramp that used to be open only during events. I say used to be because the last time I took it about a month ago it was now open all the time and one of the popular map programs had it on their routing too.
I used to take it because it lets you get off the pike without paying any tolls.
As far as the ticket, it calls for 2 points but maybe I would just say I was on official business of some sort if you could pull that off. Seems unfair to have to get two points now that the ramp is open 24/7.
shall obey the instructions of any official traffic control device
If it was me I would want to make sure that sign is an official traffic control device. I think that means it has to be registered somewhere with the State for starters.

You should refrain from giving advice about something you obviously know nothing about.

SUBCHAPTER 1. TRAFFIC REGULATIONS
16:27
-
1.1 Purpose
(a) The purpose of this chapter is to establish procedures for obtaining approvals for traffic
regulations and traffic control devices, route
restrictions for commercial motor vehicles on
non-State highways, closing of non-State highways for durations of more than 48 hours, and the operation of low-speed vehicles on State highways.
The sign is state property and on a state roadway. I doubt they installed something unapproved. (Also, the sign has been there for years if not more, driven past it many times, it's not like it's new.)

The MUTCD is 760 pages long with all sorts of endless specifications governing traffic control devices. Realistically I doubt whether having a single sign board conforms to specs in this instance and personally doubt it was ever approved.
Being that as it may, you'd have to go in and argue, which is so rarely ever done these days at the big cash register. He could actually go back and take all the pictures or video he wanted as there probably is no more exit closed sign there anyway.
Other than that 2 points can be wiped out by taking some sort of Driver Improvement class but the violation would still be there. One of the best outcomes would be to try and see if they would switch it to obstructing traffic which has no points and no record but that is a hard one to catch but since this is a fickle situation maybe they would go for it.
Almost anyone can get the unsafe driving zero points deal for about $485 but that is such a robbery too and it still pops up on insurance records if they look you up.

You think the state is that thorough and efficient!!!!!!
This is what happens when law has subjective discretion, a huge gap for bias and prejudice to take roost. Too bad the ticket was even issued.
Good suggestion to see if the signs are state approved.
