In New Jersey, I-78 and I-80 are the two major east-west highways that lead to Pennsylvania. The lengths of both are almost the same, except I-80 in nj is entirely toll free with i-78 toll free excluding the last 8 miles. Which interstate do you like more?
BTW, I78 Is toll free, its the Bridge you pay for.. (There is also a Toll on the I80 Bridge).
If you don't want to pay the toll you can get off and go thru philipsburg and go Across the "Free" bridge. (There is also a "Free" bridge for I80 also. )

Agree. Which is "better" depends on where you're going. I usually like the experience of route 80 more. Less traffic, especially trucks. And the scenery approaching the Del Water Gap is unmatched on 78. Once you cross into PA both suck, but especially route 80.
I-78 is tolled east of I-95, which is what I think the OP referred to as "the last 8 miles." That's the Newark Bay Extension of the NJ Turnpike.
I-80 for the first 6ish miles in NJ is awful. it's also not great for the last 5-10 miles in PA (heading into NJ) because people slow down for no reason when they get to the spot where the toll booths are on the OTHER side. I use I-80 a lot, because I grew up in NEPA and still visit frequently. I use I-78 when i need to go to central PA or Bethlehem. I-78 is a bit wider, i feel, and less traffic depending on the time of day. I don't really think either is "better" though.
I take a liking towards both interstates, but like I-78 a bit more. The only thing is I-80 is much closer to my house than I-78 is. Since they run almost directly parallel in nj, one could actually choose a route using both (ex: 78 E, 287 N, to 80 E to avoid GSP & Turnpike). 78 is not alway beautiful, but always better traffic wise than 80. Can 78 & 31 be a good alternate route to Stroudsburg from Bergen County if I-80 had terrible delays?
