I like Montclair but don't love it because it's insanely expensive to get a house within walking distance of downtown and that's what I prefer if I'm going to have a downtown. I hate driving five minutes to just run downtown. But I have friends who certainly don't mind and really love living there, and I certainly like to visit them, it's a lovely town. It knows it's a lovely town though and is priced accordingly.

You might check Glen Ridge, slightly better schools, higher taxes, but housing might be a little more available since it cycles through every year at high school graduation.

There are actually three walkable "downtown" areas of Montclair - the Bloomfield Ave./Church St. area, Watchung Plaza, and Upper Montclair on Valley Road.

Montclair has some beautiful neighborhoods. Don't be put off by Bay Street station.

If they want diversity Glen Ridge might not be their best bet. I grew up in Montclair so I'm a bit biased but I agree with the posters that said don't let Bay St. sour you on Montclair and I hope you find the house you want. But make sure anything you buy has enough driveway space for you now/future unless you enjoy $35 overnight parking tickets for parking infront of your house.

Yea. You can buy overnight permits for $5 a night for guests or whatnot but if you don't have enough parking room for you and your family or anyone staying on a regular basis it really sucks.

According to local realtors, February to early March is the busiest time of year, with low inventory but many serious buyers, so bidding wars are common. This is because Wall Street workers get their bonuses in January. You might want to back off for a month or so. Inventory should start increasing soon.

This is good advice. I think we will slow down for a month and some (house hunting could be a depressing affair). I really love the new developments in west orange. But the schools seem to have been on a steady decline. And this is a major reason we are looking to move.
