So we live/rent in NYC and are going to be buying a home in Glen Ridge. My wife is getting close on some jobs in NJ in anticipation of moving. I will be continuing to work in midtown. However, we will need a car ASAP if job comes through. Parking in NYC is obviously expensive. We are thinking as a temporary solution, to rent in NJ for 6-12 months, in which case we save a bundle on NYC taxes, and NYC garages, and will also have the flexibility of home shopping/closing on homes in our backyard.
What we are looking for is a 1 bedroom luxury apartment (<$2,500 including parking/pet fees), and within walking distance to a DIRECT train station (<45 min) into Penn. I am opposed to the PATH, and opposed to buses, which rules out Hoboken, Jersey City, etc and leaves us with Bloomfield to Montclair, and S. Orange to Short Hills.
We thought we solved all of our problems with Montclair Residences @ Bay Station, however, upon going on a site tour this on Saturday, we were pretty disappointed with the location and mixed demographics for tenants. The building was a wolf in sheeps clothing.
We also heard about The Station House in Maplewood, but most reviews are mediocre/negative.
Anyone recommend anything? We saw Avalon is constructing a nice complex at the Bloomfield Station, but...not open yet.
Just curious, why are you opposed to the Path? Jersey City and Hoboken are where you will find the most luxury rentals within walking distance to the train.
Have you looked into rentals at Summit? You can take a direct train to midtown and its a nice place to live in. Commute maybe closer to 1 hr though.
And pretty far from Glen Ridge. Their kid is going to make friends and you don't want to be driving all over NJ for playdates when they move in a year. It'll just be easier to move closer to GR and know where the nice local restaurants are or whatever instead of having to learn an all new town in a year.

Thats true, but since the author was looking around Maplewood, Summit isnt far from there.
