Yeah, there's a mall called Phipps here in Atlanta that make Short Hills look like KMart. It's truly amazing the money that some people have down here, even compared to the NE.

NJ is the big league's. The competition is fierce. Its tough and getting tougher. I Like that too. I notice a lot of the weeker one's who got weeded out all come back here and tell us how great there live's are now that they left NJ. Kind of makes you wonder why?
Good post, great points. I feel much the same way.

seriously, how is SH like KMart when your stores are Nordstrom, Fendi, Tiffany, Bloomies, Burberry, Cartier, Saks, Restoration Hardware, Neiman's, Louis Vuitton, Juicey, Jimmy Choo, Dolce? (yes, I looked it up) and they have valet and DOG STROLLER rentals ? Are there other stores more high end than this?

i'm not saying SH is the be-all, end-all of malls (as I said I really don't care for it that much), but come on - it's up there! and I find it hard to believe compared to ANY mall in the US it would be considered "blown away" or "KMart-like".

-I stay because I can get to 5 different malls within 25 minutes of where I live.
-I stay because although it’s expensive, if you are willing to commute a little, you can find a reasonably priced house; in a nice area (property taxes are still high, I’ll give you that).
-I stay because I have met people from all walks of life and from all parts of the world.
-I stay because I really enjoy going to the diner at 3am.
-I stay because I can eat out 7 nights a week, at 7 different places, all serving food from a different culture.
-I stay because if I want to take a spur of the moment trip to a casino I can go to AC, Mohegan Sun, Foxwoods or a select other few.
-I stay because I got a pretty good education: K-12, college, and currently finishing up grade school. All in New Jersey.
-Most of all I stay because for me, this is home.
For those moving away, good luck to you, maybe one day I will move out and give somewhere else a try, but for now, I’m a Jersey guy.
You know, I've read all the posts on this thread, and this was the post that caused an epiphany. I'd love to know what "RocktheKnight's" age is, if he is married, etc. Because RocktheKnight sounds like he leads a singles life, rather than someone who is married. I have nothing against single guys or gals, I was one myself once, and loved to go to the casinos when I had the time, eat at a diner at 3am, or shop at 5 different malls. When I was single, I was a) paying rent, and b) it was over 10 years ago. Nowadays, I'm married, with kids, and have a lot of bills. When you take on these responsibilities, coupled with the outrageous increase in housing over the past several years in NJ, your ability to live a lifestyle as outlined by RocktheKnight is extremely compromised. For people like myself, you find yourself making decisions based on your economic state. And I think those who seriously ponder the notion of moving have these very real factors to weigh in that someone who is single, with more discretionary income and responsibility doesn't have to consider. That's why I left: it was based on logic, and the ability to care for my family. To me, the state itself remains charming, the people who live there, especially. The problem remains the system of government that continues to cripple the state on the local, county and statewide level. And there are too many who reside in the state that blindly come in every election cycle and keep electing and re-electing public officials that are seemingly incapable of managing the state with any level of efficiency. Until this cycle is arrested and reversed, there will continue to be an out-migration of people the likes of StMaarten and myself who have to consider the big picture, rather than inflecting their personal pathos and heritage into the decision making process, for those factors don't pay bills.

thanks, i was wondering what malls had to do with anything? as for i am not strong enough for nj? that's the mentality i want to leave behind. words like quality of life and what's best for the ones i love mean nothing to these people. these are the same people (imo) that drive 80 plus down the left lane and feel that they are justified high beaming and honking(tailgating) anyone because they don't have the ballZ to move as fast as them. when they do crash or kill someone, they want everyone to feel bad for them. Humanity is missing in almost every place on earth and these are the people that just don't care and probably never will. I would like to say only this last thing," for evil to win all that has to happen is for good people to do nothing and be silent."
peace

Hello Mike,
Your assumptions are correct, 26 and single. I am a life long Jersey resident, I own my own home and i pay bills, a lot of them. I agree with you that my marital status allows me to live a bit of a frivolous lifestyle, but in light of the posters original message, i felt like stating some reasons why i personally stay here was a good idea. When the time comes and i find myself married with children then perhaps i will take my money and livlihood to someplace a little cheaper and a little more politically correct. I have to be honest though, i hope i am not forced to do so because i love what this state has to offer and it would be tough for me to go, but i can understand why other's make the decision to do so. For now however, i am going to stick it out, for as long as possible.

It's not necessarily the stores- as you said, Neiman's, etc., are the high end shops and are the same here as there (though there are some local non-chain shops and restaurants at Phipps that are ultra-high-end)- it's the level of finish/design, and the clientele. This place has better finishes than I've seen in most Class A office buildings, dramatic multi-story spaces, and a valet full of Bentleys, Ferrari's, etc.- while Short Hills has most of the same stores, it doesn't have the ambiance (sp) that this place does. The K-Mart comment was obviously an exaggeration, but you get the point (I hope....lol).

Kate, Kate, Kate....what are we going to do with you.....lol.

As I explained in the post above, this isn't a case of "top that"- it's just reality. It's partly due to the fact that many of NJ's malls and other amenities have been in place for decades, and aren't as fresh as they could be. In fact, I think Short Hills Mall is in the middle of a facelift project as we speak in an attempt to bring it into the new century. Phipps did the same thing around 10 years ago, and the Lenox Mall across the street also went from an open single-story mall to an enclosed 2-story mall about the same time. Don't worry- NJ's malls will catch up- they have too, since they're such a big part of the culture there.....lol

Ok.....all though personally I still prefer "outdoor shopping"
Journal Sq or Broadway in Bayonne back in the day..now you have to go into NYC for that
But to keep on topic of 'Why should I stay?" Jersey has much to offer and a lot of it has already been mentioned
